Colwyn Bay getting somewhere?

Colwyn Bay 1 Eastwood Town 2
Unibond Division 1

Colwyn Bay needed to win this match in order to get in the Play-offs. This outcome looked unlikely in the first half. It was a turgid affair with a lack of oomph and snazz. The sun beat down ceaselessly from the crystal-clear azure sky of deepest summer. Eastwood were leading at half time and Colwyn Bay were treading water, figuratively speaking of course. The prospect of a cold beer at half time kept our spirits up. These hopes were dashed as the queue proved too large.

The second half started and Colwyn Bay must have been victims of the hairdryer style of motivation; they looked a different team. There was passing, shots and nice touches to keep the faithful happy. The only missing ingredient was a finish, although several chances were close. Bay didn't score until just before stoppage time but there was 8 minutes of that.

The amount of injury time was a result of a rather unnecessary confrontation that turned into something interesting. Virtually all of the players and some of the backroom staff were involved. The "mass brawl" started when an umconnected player (to the original incident) ran in to offer his mediating skills, as per usual, and this acted as a catalyst for the others to join in, as per usual. As a result 2 Eastwood players and 1 Bay player saw red cards.

Despite the fact Colwyn Bay were losing some of their fans began cheering. They needed Stocksbridge Park Steels to gain the same result and evidently this was occurring. Garth, Chris and I enjoyed some leisurely cool drinks in the clubhouse after the game, what a pleasant way to salve our sun beaten foreheads. The atmosphere was jovial and welcoming, although an Eastwood fan mistook me for a Colwyn Bay fan. The good feelings were undeniably encouraged by free chips. All Colwyn Bay had to do this week was go to Cammel Laird and win, not an easy prospect.
