Strange surroundings

As I was watching brief snatches of the Wakefield Vs Bradford rugby league match on Sunday I saw something exotic. At first I thought I must have been mistaken but then it appeared again briefly, a little later I saw it again. My attention had been caught by an advertising hoarding. It was advertising Elton John and it struck me as a touch incongruous.

I like to think that I'm as broad-minded as the next bloke but I struggled to come up with a reason for its presence. Elton John is the the purveyor of nice, sesitive and slushy pop music whereas rugby players aren't exactly known for their sensitive sides. Some rugby players can tend to be walking cliches, displaying overtly "masculine" qualities whereas Elton John is quite the opposite. However the advert was probably not aimed at the players; not many players tend to pass the time by looking at the adverts. This would mean the general public must have been the intended audience. I know that most Rugby fans, the probable audience, are red-blooded males so maybe we have to look elsewhere.

There can only be one other explanation; it's all down the homo-erotic undertones of rugby. The game of big hits, naked aggression and hyper-masculinity is basically a load of men in shorts running after each other trying to grab each other by the legs.

Consequently I would like to applaud this action by the broadcasters. It shows a maturity in dealing with modern gender issues, bravo!! Keep up the good fight.
