Wales 4 Liechtenstein 0
International Friendly
After a gap of 2 and a half years Wales return to the Racecourse. After Canada which team do we face? Liechtenstein that's who. Why do we get all the big games up here? I'm going to write to the FAW to complain about this blatent favouritism.
Ther Llandudno Jet Set was out in force for this; Gaz, Dan, Lisa, Joel and Sion were making the trip and it's Sion's first ever game. We left at 5:45 from Llandudno and had to change at Shotton, where we had a 30 minute wait in the rain. Unfortunately our train was late so we'd miss the first 20 minutes or so then someone had the bright idea of ordering taxi. A taxi ride later and we were at the turnstiles, in the queue I saw a familiar face, it was my footballing companion from Thursday nights, Dafydd. No doubt will be reminiscing about this tommorrow.
Our tickets were for the Kop which is fine in principle as they are cheaper, unfortunately on a night like like the prospect of getting soaked on a open terrace doesn't hold the same allure. That said at least we have coats and umbrellas and our warm personalities. As we entered I saw another friendly face, Arwel from Friday's football. We found enough space for ourselves and began to watch the night's events. Due to the inclement weather the flag would not be making an appearance.
Wales took to their task well and attacked the Liechtensteiners with pace. It wasn't long before Koumas put us ahead with a powerful shot. The second followed shortly and Wales took a good grip upon the game. Steve Evans looked very comfortable considering he was playing in the Welsh Premier 6 months ago, having said that Liechtenstein didn't really manage too much in attack apart from two smart shots. Lofty should have been playing but another injury for Swansea meant that his debut would be delayed yet further. It was 2-0 at the break.
The rain wasn't falling as heavily by half-time, it just seemed to be a spray now. Just before half time I saw a couple more faces, Gary form Rhosneigr (who had the same idea with his flag) and Hywyn. I spent half time chatting with Hywyn and we made plans to meet up in Dublin. I returned to the bosom of the Jet Set for the impending second half.
Wales kept up with the momentum and went close on a few occasions. My mind began to wander at some points, as it's want to do in friendlies. I should really learn how to stop doing this as I'm at danger of not savouring a Welsh win properly, especially as they don't come around as often as we'd all like. Wales finally scored two more goals (Bellemy and Llewelyn) and rounded off the evening with a flourish. As we left I asked for Sion's opinion and he said "Well the result was good but we can't really judge how this will aid Wales' development as it's only a friendly, I believe that a stiffer challenge will be found in Croke Park" And with that Sion had hit the nail on the head, not bad for a football virgin. A rather damp train atmosphere was felt on the way home by everyone.
