Wales 2 Finland 1
Women's U19 European Championships Qualifier, Rhyl
Karl gave me another lift, this time to Belle Vue. Chris from the Jet Set agreed to come as well but would be late due to his nasty habit of playing golf. We arrived to find a near deserted Belle Vue; they obviously don't like football in Rhyl. As we were waiting for the kick off a Rhyl steward started talking to me. I knew not all Rhyl fans were unpleasant tossers. Unfortunately the presence of the guy that shot Dewi a murderous glance last Monday was casting a deeply unpleasant shadow upon my sense of well-being.
The anthems kicked in and one man choir was singing the Welsh anthem, I don't feel the need to sing it at these sorts of games. As the Finnish anthem was playing all of their team turned to face their flag, or maybe they were facing mine, all hail the Jet Set!! There was no sign of Chris by kick off so we went to sit in the sun. I was wearing a hat, long-sleeved shirt and sunglasses; I wasn't going to suffer the same fate as yesterday!!
The game was good; Wales and Finland attacked well without actually getting anything on target. Finland dominated the early stages before Wales came into it. As Karl, Nic and I were chatting we struggled to remember any fouls never mind Yellow cards in any of the three games so far. As we were having one of these conversations Wales scored, and it looked like a good goal. Still no sign of Chris but at least Wales were ahead. This didn't even last until half time as Finland equalised. I suppose they deserved it.
Just after Finland scored Chris phoned. After following my instructions to the letter he arrived at half time. Just after he phoned the weather had begun to change, by the time he arrived the sky had become cloudy. I don't know whether the two were connected though.
Wales were now attacking our end. They were doing this well but Finland were also dangerous on the break. Wales looked to have a slight advantage because Finland's goalie had sustained an injury in a challenge. However the goalie made some very good saves. The match turned more in Wales' favour after a Caernarfon player, Shan Jones, was introduced. She looked to be incisive in her running and good at shooting. Wales scored again and the compassionate side of me came out; I felt sorry for the Finnish Goalie. I'm not cold-hearted enough to be a real fan. Wales held on for victory but we were still eliminated unfortunately. Karl and I agreed to meet up in Wrexham for the New Zealand game, ah well, back to life.
Wales Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
